Step 1: A simple Floor Plan.

Chances are the first thing you are going to want is a set of simple floorplans. A long long time before you engage your architect to create a set of detailed construction documents you will need a simple floorplan layout. There are two ways you can do this, you can use the back of the cocktail napkin method.

Lets be honest a pen and piece of paper are possibly the greatest design tools ever !  I use a pen and paper constantly about the only downside to them is that design is a process of exploring ideas and continually making small changes until you arrive at the final idea that you want and pen and ink does not lend itself to making changes at all well.

Very quickly you will want to get your sketches into something more like this…

A traditional CAD style 2D floor plan that you can easily make unlimited changes to with having to start over and over like you would with pen and ink.

( BTW: you don’t need to make a sketch to start although you can trace over any image that you scan into your computer which is fantastic if you want to modify or add to existing plans that you have seen ) Amazingly you can even add colors, materials and textures to your floorplan like this . . . WOW !
