Many years ago when we first started developing Interior Design Software all of our products where based on traditional 2D floor plan style programs.

The software we created allowed our users to create 2D line drawings of the footprint of a house as though you where looking from the top down inside like a dolls house both in black and white and in color like the image below.

A few years later thanks to the extraordinary improvements in low cost  computer gaming hardware we where able to develop interior design software based on 3D games technology.

This meant that rather than simply creating static 2D floor plan images we where able to create 3D design environments in which you could actually get in a walk around just like a 3D game !

Almost immediately we started to see a segment of our customers that where interested in our software not as an Professional Interior Design Tool but for the entertainment value in itself. These customers weren’t planning a house to live in they where designing houses using our software just for fun, this group of customers where not expected but looking back at where the games technology came from it should not have been much of a surprise that people would be interested as a Room Decor Game.

To support this group of local customers we started to build some unusual features into our software that truly make the experience “game like”

The most significant of these was a joy stick controller interface. Basically you can set up any Windows compatible PC joystick controller with our 3D Interior Design Games and use it to control your movement in and around your 3D world.

You can activate these settings under the window > preferences > input options

There are settings to  program the various elements like buttons and joysticks and a damping function to adjust the sensitivity of the controller.

Surfing around the web I found this great story on the future of kitchens and specifically future kitchen design, the images embedded in the post spoke to me so much I had to share this with you.

The future kitchen may be almost unrecognizable by today’s ideas for modern kitchen design. The future of kitchen design will be driven by the need  to be environmentally friendly, efficient, and durable but at the same time elegant and sophisticated.

The Alight kitchen from Altera Design Studio is an award winning future kitchen design from the Incheon International Design Competition and it hosts a number of features.

Whirlpool’s ‘green kitchen of the future is a concept that pays a lot of attention to reduce wastage by diverting 60% of the water and heat generated from itself to fuel other appliances or functions in the kitchen. For example, it uses the heat from the fridge compressor to produce hot water for the dish washer.

And my favorite this high tech future kitchen design which is already available for purchase from designer Sebastien Poupeau it is height adjustable, music enabled and web connected.

Well at least we have a few years to get our Kitchen Design Software ready for all those compound curves : )

Kitchen Design Ideas of the Future

I can imagine what the experience of buying a kitchen will be like in the future, fully immersive high definition virtual reality showrooms featuring full scale design review approval and materials selection.

We readily accept the fact that our software is rather more “general purpose” in nature than that, in fact it is designed to help you with everything from designing a kitchen or living room to landscaping or swimming pool and beyond whether or not Feng Shui principals are applied or not – so let’s be practical in all likelihood it is going to be somewhat less feature rich than some “purpose built” Feng Shui Software in some specific areas and its not going to explain the principles of Feng Shui to you as you go.

This is a sample model built using our 3D Home Design Software. It is important to note that this is not the 3D software itself rather it is a finished demonstration model that has been built using our software and presented in our free viewer software, you can use the same viewer software to share any models you build or you can simply create a screenshot like the image above.

This model has been made available so that that you can see what a finished model looks like and also to make sure that our software is compatible with your computer. The minimum specifications are Microsoft Windows and a 3D Graphics Card fitted to your machine. If you are using Vista you must have SP1 and the latest graphics card drivers installed.

When you install the demo model you will see the camera cycle around the room to various camera locations, this is NOT a video – it is a real time model that is cycling around a number of camera locations in the room -  if you want to walk around the model in manual model click on the blue icon that looks like a man walking in the top it will place you into walk mode – from there navigation is gaming inspired:

Forward – Up Arrow Key

Backward – Down Arrow Key

Right – Right Arrow Key

Left – Left Arrow Key

Press the R key for Reset

The interest in converting old Shipping Containers into real world homes is exploding. Following a discussion with a Architect friend about the application of our Home Design Software to this design niche I was rather surprised by just how many people are researching and interested in Shipping  Container Homes and Container House Design.

A few years ago we created an add on module for our Home Design Software for the task of visualization of Shipping Container Modules in the Built Environment, now I am more aware of just how many people are interested in this area I have decided to make those library modules into a public release of our Home Software.

If you are interested in Shipping Container Design you might be interested in these two design resources that I came across in my research.

The first is a book called Intermodal Shipping Container Small Steel Buildings which is quite mouth full but its a good resource.

It explains how to purchase steel cargo containers and modify them for use as buildings saving up to 40% over tradition construction methods. ‘

Intermodal Shipping Container Small Steel Buildings is 116 pages and includes photos, diagrams, and plans.

The second is a 200 page Illustrated Manual of Shipping Container Home Design

This is a 200 Page Illustrated Manual Athat you can download without waiting for the book shippment.

I have included a series of photographs that show some truly wonderful examples of design genre using this resource – how wonderful they are – who would have thought that these beautiful homes began life as humble shipping containers.
